Save and restore desktop icon layout in Windows Vista

Tzu Hsuan Chen

It can be challenging to keep icons organized when Windows rearranges desktop icons due to frequent resolution changes, such as playing a game or connecting to an external monitor. This guide provides a simple method for saving and restoring the location of desktop icons in Windows Vista by adding a right-click menu option to the Computer icon.

Installation process

  1. Download and extract files:
  2. Copy Layout.dll into the C:\Windows\System32\
  3. Modify the Registry:
    • Double-click Layout.reg, which we will need to add content to the Windows registry.
  4. Enable the feature:
    • Right-click on the Computer entry in the Start menu or desktop.
    • Click either one of the following, based on the way you want to arrange your icons: Save Desktop Icon Layout or Restore Desktop Icon Layout.
  5. Restoring the icon layout:
    • If icons get rearranged, right-click on Computer and select Restore Desktop Icon Layout.
    • Icons will revert to their saved positions.
  6. Try to move the icons after the options are saved to ensure the adjustments are saved.

64-bit Windows installation

  1. Download setup.exe from amip.tools-for.net instead of Layout.zip.
  2. Follow the same process above.

To uninstall the feature

  1. Download UninstallDesktopLayout.zip, extract, and double-click the registry file.
  2. Logout and login again.
    • The changes take effect after logging out and logging back in.
  3. Manually remove the DLL file:
    • Delete Layout.dll from C:\Windows\System32\ to complete the uninstallation.

Conclusion

The addition of a right-click menu option allows users to easily save and restore desktop icon layouts, preventing the frustration associated with rearranging icons after changing resolutions. In conclusion, following these steps can achieve a more organized and consistent desktop experience, regardless of whether you are using Windows Vista or, potentially, Windows XP.
