Extend the Windows 7 trial from 30 to 120 days

Tzu Hsuan Chen

In Windows 7, users can install the operating system without a license key and use it for 30 days in Trial mode. However, many users are unaware that this trial can be legally extended up to 120 days, giving additional time before activation is required. In this guide, I will explain how to extend the trial period using a built-in command.

How to extend the Windows 7 trial

Step 1: Check your current trial period

  • Right-click on Computer and select Properties.
  • Check the remaining activation days at the bottom of the system window.

Step 2: Open Command Prompt with administrator rights

  • Click the Start Menu or use Search, and type command prompt.
  • Right-click on Command Prompt, then choose Run as Administrator.

Step 3: Run the rearm command

  • Type the following command exactly as shown:  slmgr -rearm.
  • After a few seconds, you will receive a message confirming the success of the command.

Step 4: Verify your trial has been extended

  • Go back to Computer > Properties.
  • You should now see that the trial has been reset to 30 days.

Note: This method can be used up to three times, allowing a total of 120 days of trial use.

Limitations of the Windows 7 trial mode

When Windows 7 is used in Trial mode without activation, the following restrictions may apply:

  1. Frequent activation reminders: You’ll receive regular notifications urging you to activate Windows.
  2. Desktop watermark: In the bottom-right corner of your desktop, you will see a message stating “This copy of Windows is not genuine.”
  3. Disabled personalization: Personalization options such as changing your wallpaper will be disabled, and your desktop background will be set to black.
  4. Limited access to updates: Only critical and security updates like basic protection from viruses, malware, hackers, and system vulnerabilities will be available, while optional updates and certain software downloads may be restricted.
  5. Reduced visual experience: Some advanced features may be disabled, such as Aero Glass.
  6. Hourly shutdowns after trial expiry: The system may begin automatically shutting down every hour after the 30-day trial period (or 120 days extension) has ended.

Microsoft places limitations to encourage activation and prevent unauthorized use. These restrictions help prevent copying, protect intellectual property, and ensure users are running a genuine, fully licensed version of Windows with complete access to features and updates.

Conclusion

Extending the Windows 7 trial period is an available and useful feature for users who require more time before committing to activation. By using the slmgr -rearm command, you can legally reset the trial up to three times, allowing 120 days of use without a license key. Although Trial mode provides basic functionality and essential security updates, it also has several limitations that can affect your experience over time. The best long-term solution for gaining full access to personalization, feature updates, and uninterrupted performance is to activate your copy of Windows 7.
