Aiden Mangalick

The most memorable and grand party you can attend is a wedding. Planning a wedding may seem a daunting task, but creating the dream wedding can only happen when you plan carefully. The affianced must answer many questions, including: What is the best venue? Who should we invite? Who will cater and provide the food? What kind of wedding cake should we order? These questions will dictate the budget and which vendors will fit best. This guide explains the process of planning a successful wedding in 10 simple steps.

Enjoy engagement

Soon-to-be brides and grooms need to enjoy each other’s presence. Writing down the story of the engagement in detail is important. Taking photos with the engagement ring and scrapbooking the entire process is important in remembering all the wonderful feelings.

Announce the marriage

The parents should know first of the impending nuptials before anyone else. Both bride and groom should be present with them, and ideally, the meeting should be in person. When face-to-face, the parents can physically witness the happiness between the two lovers, see the ring, and begin to conceptualize the wedding in their minds. After this, the two should then share their news with close friends. This can be done through social media, instant message groups, or even just word of mouth.

Journal the experience

The season of planning a wedding is one of ten thousand unforgettable moments. However, try as one might, the specifics tend to be forgotten. A journal or scrapbook allows one to write down their favorite moments and can act as a place for one to release their negative emotions. Sometimes things become frustrating, and the journal can be a haven for those emotions. A wedding blog can work as well.

Announce the engagement

Spread the news! The intendeds can announce their engagement in print publications or by mailing “Save the Date” announcements to friends and family. However, it is most common for new couples to use social media platforms like Facebook or X to announce their engagement. Additionally, this is the ideal time to create a wedding website to host information about the location and date while also containing photos of the two lovers. An example of a website is theknot.com.  Information could be updated easily, so if things change, there is no need for a new card to be sent out to guests.

Set the date

Likely the most important decision, selecting the date of the wedding can seem a herculean task. Not only is it the question most commonly asked of engaged couples, but it also tends to be extremely difficult to make any progress in planning the wedding before a date is selected.

Set the tone of the event

Formal, casual, or themed are three common tones of weddings. Religious or secular ceremony is another important question. Deciding the “feel” of the wedding is important. Speaking with one’s partner and journaling about the ideal wedding can help with this choice. Analyzing the adjectives each person writes in their books may assist as a starting point for the decision. A wedding planning questionnaire may also help.

Set the budget

Using spreadsheet software like Excel or Google Sheets, create a wedding budget worksheet. Looking at finances and determining how much is in savings at the present and how much will be in their savings in the future all contribute to the budget. Speaking with the parents and asking what they would like to contribute, or if there is anything they may want to subsidize costs. Some couples may consider taking out loans for their wedding. Starting out financially strong is important in a relationship, as married couples fight about money more than anything else. Opening a new credit card may help, but one must ensure to make timely payments and minimize debt.

Select attendants

The attendants at a wedding do much more than loiter next to the bride and groom, but for them to be helpful, they must begin to be involved early in the wedding planning process. Many couples opt not to have any attendants, but most choose between two and twelve members in the bridal party. The couple should look over the lists of responsibilities for bridesmaids and groomsmen before making any final decisions.

Book the venue

Many venues are booked a year or more in advance, so the earlier the couple can begin to start looking, the more likely they are to get the time, date, and cost they desire.

Get help from friends, family, or a wedding planner

The successful bride and groom know not to plan their wedding alone—they ask for help. This may be from professionals, literature, online platforms, or trusted friends who have already planned their weddings. Here are a few options:

  • Hiring a wedding planner or consultant. Most couples are busy and may feel overwhelmed by the experience. A professional can assist in putting together the ideal day and often knows where to locate the best deals.
  • Use online checklists. Many options are free and especially helpful if planning with a family member or even a future spouse who does not currently live in the same location. The lists help one to stay on top of all the important “to-dos.”
  • Many couples enjoy purchasing wedding magazines, but also picking up a wedding planning book can help. There are about as many options in books as there are in magazines.

After making all these decisions, you will likely have a solid foundation for your wedding. Wedding planning is a lot of fun: choosing dresses, tuxes, flowers, music, favors, and more. Use this wedding planning checklist to stay organized and on top of it all.
